Peace & Freedom magazine

Peace & Freedom is a poetry, prose, and art magazine, first published by Paul Rance in 1985. It is one of a number of publications produced by Peace & Freedom Press, which Rance co-founded with Hartlepool poet Andrew Bruce.

Though being a continuation of previous Paul Rance-produced publications, such as The Warden and Harmony, Peace & Freedom magazine began life as a photocopied zine until the late 1980s, when its first properly printed issue was an ill-advised green ink affair.

Peace & Freedom has evolved into a more poetry orientated publication, from its poetry/music beginnings, and now also publishes short stories and essays. The magazine still has a strong emphasis on social, humanitarian and environmental issues.

Poets, writers, and bands who have graced the pages of Peace & Freedom include Henry Normal, Steve Sneyd, Andrew Darlington, Andrew Savage, Chumbawamba, Ian McNabb, and Man's Hate. Despite internet rumours to the contrary, no proof of rock musician Pete Doherty posting an ad in Peace & Freedom, seeking fellow poets as a very young man, has yet been found.
